In 2008, La Puerta Abierta started a Mommy and Me Early Stimulation class after identifying a need to provide an environment for healthy learning and stimulation for the children between the ages of 6 months and 6 years old of Santiago Atitlan. Mommy and Me was started with an intent to create an inviting environment for young children to experiment with the world around them, while modeling for their mothers a variety of ways in which they could interact with and stimulate their children at home. The first 3 years of life is a critical time for children as they form the foundation for future growth, development, and learning.
Mothers and their children come together each Saturday morning to participate in the Mommy and Me class where they engage in creative play, story time, and early childhood stimulation activities. As young children begin to discover the world around them, they draw upon the five senses (sight, hearing, taste, smell, and touch) to guide them. Each class is set up with a variety of stations for children to explore and learn with their mothers. Stations include tactile bins, painting, books, play dough, construction/blocks, and creative arts. As the children spend time at each one of the tables, they are able to use their five senses and the other tools provided for them to explore and discover.
